Bebop Solo Generator

This is a dead simple implementation of Barry Harris' Diminished Sixth theory, applied to the chord changes you enter below to generate a bebop solo line. Just enter some changes and press play. The algorithm chooses the scales which can be played over the chords according to Barry's teachings, randomly changing direction and scale / chord substitutes (see parameters below). Currently only consecutive 8th notes are generated, without any phrasing and only supporting 4/4 measures with max. two chords per bar. There are some preset examples to demonstrate the concept, however, you can change the chords and remove/add bars if you like to experiment with your own changes.

NOTE: The timing of the playback is more than inaccurate, however it was not the goal to create pleasantly sounding music here. This generator is just for experimental purposes, without any warranty or anything. Also, this is not how the concepts of Barry sound when applied correctly by a human player!

The page is built on pure JavaScript. For audio playback of the generated notes, the AudioSynth library by Keith Horwood is used. The rest of the code that drives this page is licensed under the Gnu General Public License (GPLv3).

Disclaimer: This page is not in any way associated to Barry Harris. It just makes some fun experimenting with the concepts.

Parameters for Solo Generation:

Max. Scale Duration The scales are chosen randomly at the start of every chord. This is the number of notes the scale is used until a new one is chosen even if the chord did not change.
Change Direction Probability The direction of movement is automatically changed if the solo goes too igh or low. If you enable a probability of more than zero here, the direction is also changed randomly in between.
Upwards Movement This determines the type of solo movement when moving up the scale.
Downwards Movement This determines the type of solo movement when moving down the scale.
Lowest Solo Note The lowest note allowed for the solo rendering.
Highest Solo Note The highest note allowed for the solo rendering.
